A master at a Mason
If you're in the South-East Queensland region over the weekend of August 20-21, you would be mad to miss the next performance in the Con Brio Concert Series for which Mason & Hamlin are proud to be a principal partner.
The series, hosted and co-presented by the Arts Centre Gold Coast is the flagship classical music series in that city and this performance features one of Australia's finest concert pianists, Melbourne based Timothy Young. Young, who heads the piano department at Australia's most prestigious music school, the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) is returning to the series after a sell-out performance in 2013.
In this program, he tackles three epic works of the twentieth century. Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit - with its gorgeous French impressionist colours opens the recital before the repertoire looks to Russia. Scriabin's 5th sonata and the monumental b-flat minor sonata of Rachmaninov bring a healthy dose of Russian romanticism and no shortage of virtuosity.
These composers are particularly fitting given that Ravel demanded a Mason & Hamlin piano exclusively for his 1915 USA tour and Rachmaninov was also an enormous fan of the Mason & Hamlin, owning several in his life. It was a 1918 Mason & Hamlin that he chose to record all his famous AMPICO piano rolls on.
